Hamlet Final Assignment

Piper McCutcheon

For my Final Assignment I decided to do a mind map. It is different from most mind maps, but how I did mine was I based everything around Hamlet’s brain. I put arrows showing what I think is most likely on his mind. I related the main themes in the play Hamlet with this mind map and put the four main themes and arrows connecting them to his brain.

I chose death for one of the main themes Hamlet thinks about. Death is so significant in the play because Hamlet is a tragedy and death shapes the play into a tragedy. Also I put some characters that died in the play beside the main characters. I know that eventually everyone ends up dieing but the reason I put only certain people is because these were the people that had died or were murdered well Hamlet was still alive. I believe that seeing so many deaths helped his development as a character by accepting fate and that it is inevitable that everyone will die eventually.

Another theme I put on the mind map is love, love is again a main theme in the play Hamlet. On the mind map I put four main people he loves Ophelia, Old Hamlet, Gertrude and Horatio. Each of these characters he loves in a different way, whether it is family love, friendship, or actual love. Every one of these four characters has had an influence on Hamlet’s mind and how he thinks.

The third theme is family. Throughout the whole play he is trying to get revenge on Claudius because of what he did to his father. Hamlet is defending his father’s honor and well doing this ends up killing himself and everyone else in the process.

The fourth theme that is going on in Hamlet’s mind is Deception. Both Laertes and Claudius throughout most of the play have deceived Hamlet. This has caused Hamlet not to trust those two characters because of what they have done to him.

Also, there are words on the mind map one being Confusion, it is on the mind map because I think that in the play and in Hamlets mind at times there is a lot of confusion and inner conflict with himself. Another word is Fate, at first he has a hard time accepting fate but in the end of the play Hamlet he finally has accepted it and has grown as a character.

My mind map shows Hamlet’s mind and what I think he is thinking throughout and at the end of the play.

Word Count: 433

Document Assignment Act 3

File Document Act 3

Gertrude: (Aside) Hamlet has killed a man right before my eyes. I couldn’t have stopped him, could I have? It all happened so quickly. What was I suppose to do? I had no idea he was going to jab his sword into the curtain and kill dear Polonius. Although, he really shouldn’t have been spying on Hamlet’s conversation and mine. So is it my fault? I guess just a little bit. Still I wasn’t the one to stick a sword in his chest, it was my dear son Hamlet. I do not know what got into him but I know why he did it. He thought it was Claudius hiding behind the curtain.

When he told me about his father I did not know how to take it. I really did think he was crazy because of his love with Ophelia. Now I know it was not love and he is not crazy, it was a ghost of his father, I believe him now.

Also, with him killing Polonius he must flee the state of Denmark. This is a better way for Hamlet to leave and go to England. I am certain Claudius will take care of things and make all suspicions disappear, because we are the King and Queen of Denmark who would dare question our authority.

Hamlet will go to England and Claudius and I will deal with this unsightly matter. Plus no one will accuse or hold this incident against Hamlet, he is the Prince of Denmark. Mostly everyone respects and adores him.

Document Assignment Act 2

File Document Act 2

Dear Hamlet,

My lord open your eyes, listen closely. Do not think I am trying to fool a man of your honor. I am sincerely sorry about old Hamlet’s passing. Secretly I have never liked your Uncle Claudius and with recent events I am very suspicious of him you should be to.

I may know who murdered him. After your father died your mother got married quite fast for anyone’s likings. I have suspicions about your Uncle Claudius or should I say the King because he married your mother. It seems he wooed your mother much to fast and tricked her into marrying him. Also I am now putting the pieces of the puzzle together. On the day your father was killed many said your uncle was not seen around the palace but I saw him my Lord. He was in the library when I went to get a book for the Queen. He yelled at me to get out right when I opened the door, I was startled and closed the door quickly. That was when I heard the Queen scream from the garden. I ran to see what was the matter when I saw old Hamlet lying breathless in the garden. Hamlet, I want you to know that I don’t think you should trust your uncle. I am not positive he murdered your father but the way he has been acting has made me think twice about his actions.

Be careful Hamlet, do not trust him I am just trying to warn you Do not think I am foolish, please believe me Hamlet!

Document Assignment Act 1

File Document Assignment Act 1

It’s been a long day, mainly filled with disappointment and sorrow. My dearest brother left on the ship just as the clock struck 4. Before he departed on his journey he spoke of Hamlet’s relationship and mine, well if one exists. I do wish Laertes did not leave. I will miss him greatly and his advice to me on love. Saying “Thou art ill informed about Lord Hamlet”. Even though Laertes warned me, it is hard to control myself he is just so handsome. I will write about my experiences in the palace and send them to thy brother.

After Laertes left, father came to talk about what gossip he had been hearing around thy palace. Thy Lord was angry “ thou art not understand yourself clearly” he spoke loudly and clearly like the water from a fresh spring. He resembled brother, when he would say I was being childish and for not seeing that Hamlet did not truly love me. I know they see me differently and how they think Hamlet does not love me but he does. I am passionately in love with him. I told him what words he spoke of his affection toward me, but all that father did was look at me like I had a third eye. After a long talk with thy Lord I understood his feelings toward Hamlet. They were fiery red with anger and towards me he were passionate because he wanted to protect me. I am his only daughter and with brother not here, I’m his only child.

I agreed with Father and told him I would stop seeing Hamlet as much as I used to, I wanted to make him happy. I do understand what my brother and father are saying they just want to protect me, but despite my father warning me I could never stop loving Hamlet.
